Blues performed by a singer who hails from the land of chanson? With Véronique Gayot, it works wonderfully. Her unique voice conveys so much passion and raw energy that she now has a loyal fan base not only in France but across Europe. Smooth yet scratchy and somehow hardly controllable – that's how it sounds when Véronique Gayot sings the blues. In addition to the obligatory comparisons with Janis Joplin, the name Robert Plant from Led Zeppelin is also often mentioned as a reference. That may be true. However, Véronique Gayot actually has much more to offer. When "soul, skill, and passion meet and celebrate the blues, which can also sometimes sound a bit soulful," wrote a reviewer about her 2018 debut album Wild Cat. The follow-up work Animal, released in 2021, continued seamlessly and expanded Véronique Gayot's spectrum towards classic rock and gospel.
While her albums feature original compositions, the live program also occasionally includes cover versions such as "Gimme Shelter," "Sixteen Tons," or "Personal Jesus," all of which the French singer and her band give a solid rock refresh. The musical companions include Yannick Eichert on guitar, Jérome Wolf on bass, and Jérome Spieldenner on drums. Even when the three mainly operate in the background, they need not hide. Each of them is a recognized master of his instrument. Especially guitarist Yannick Eichert provides samples of this, regularly showcasing his virtuoso skills in interplay with Véronique Gayot's energetic and powerful voice.
Weiler Bluesnächte
The Weiler Bluesnächte have a long tradition. Originally, the cultural office of the three-country town brought international top stars of the jazz scene to the vaulted cellar of the Old Town Hall in Altweil for 25 years, together with jazz expert Dieter Brunow from Haltingen. Later, the group "Exbluesive" led by blues expert Klaus Deuss was won as a partner for this sought-after music series. After the pandemic, the cultural office continued the series with "Jazz und Blues Südbaden - exbluesive e. V." The association consists of blues-enthusiastic music lovers from the South Baden region and regularly invites to blues and rock concerts with national and international top bands.
