Description

Shakespeare's comedy "Was ihr wollt" is a vibrant play with identities, desires, disguise, and social roles. The focus is on Viola, who, after a shipwreck, believes she has lost her twin brother Sebastian and disguises herself as a man under the name Cesario to serve Duke Orsino. Orsino loves Countess Olivia, who in turn falls in love with Cesario, unaware that he is actually a woman. At the same time, Viola develops feelings for Orsino in her role as Cesario. Why does Viola choose the male role at the duke's court? In our inclusive production, we intertwine the themes of gender and disability, without equating them. Both mark boundaries of social norms and make visible who is seen and who is not. The production seeks less clear answers than images of the tension between freedom, disguise, and belonging. Sarah Kurze, born in 1993 in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, initially worked as an assistant director at Volksbühne Berlin, with the Lovefuckers, and from 2018 to 2020 at Deutsches Theater Berlin, where she also realized her own works. Since 2020, she has regularly directed at theaters including Theater Konstanz, Volkstheater Rostock, Deutsches Theater Göttingen, Theater Bonn, Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe, and continues at Deutsches Theater Berlin. In the 2025/26 season, she will direct for the first time at RambaZamba Theater.
