Description
"‹If he wants the divorce, give it to him. The children are better off with him›, Wanda says indifferently to the judge. The young woman from the coal region of Pennsylvania gives up her family, her job, and even herself, with an uncertain goal. Barbara Loden directed herself with painful directness in this role: as a woman who gets involved with men who only exploit her, and who eventually even lets herself be pushed into a poorly planned bank robbery. Loden's film, shot in 1970 with the smallest possible team and low budget on 16 mm, drifts through run-down bars and motels, over dusty streets and industrial wastelands (…). At the time a critics' but not a box office success, Wanda is now considered a milestone of feminist cinema and one of the most important films of the 70s for its unflinching observation of everyday life. A tragedy that Loden could not make another film; she died of cancer in 1980 at the age of 48. In her estate, her husband Elia Kazan discovered a lot of screenplays."
