Vtoroi Ka is a genre-diverse duo from Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. The group was founded in 2017 by childhood friends Ilya and Sultan. They achieved underground success with their first two studio albums – the hip-hop influenced Dependence Day (2020) and the more eclectic Serial (2022) – but became a true viral sensation with their refined post-punk in the style of Baxter Dury. After releasing singles from their third album Piggy Ride (2024), their fan base on Spotify grew to over 200,000 monthly listeners in less than a year. The key to their international appeal is the combination of musical talent with the ability to authentically portray their unconventional personalities on camera. Their music videos, full of sharp humor and ironic promotional activities on social media, are as striking as their endlessly inventive music. A significant role is also played by their dedication to their hometown of Bishkek, where both grew up. Unlike many emerging producer duos competing for a place in the spotlight of the music industry, they do not try to style themselves as urban stars. They shoot their music videos in the mountainous Bishkek and naturally present this vibrant corner of the world to the audience. The extraordinary charisma of Vtoroi Ka members is reflected in every step they take. After the success of their previous recording, it seemed logical to record another post-punk album, but in their latest work, they again resist any genre classification. On the EP Po Gube, Sultan and Ilya created a bombastic recording with rave elements, complex beats, and irresistible choruses. The core of each track – especially the title single “Po Gube” – is a sense of pop and its free emotional waves. If Hacienda still existed, Vtoroi Ka would likely offer a residency for the dark and hard ecstasy that their music conveys. About their musical manifesto, the band says: “Po Gube conveys the spirit of the city at night. Its temptations. Its dark side. It’s a sound dystopia… nothing makes sense… just sound, money, instincts, and decay…” To celebrate the release of the EP Po Gube and in preparation for their next album, Vtoroi Ka is leaving the familiar paths of Central Asia, where they have mostly performed until now, and heading to Europe. The year 2025 will be the first year in their history when they will perform in the “West” – and it will definitely not be just a few stops. They have concerts in iconic halls and performances at the Iceland Airwaves festival ahead of them.
