Description
Zurich regularly ranks among the top of the most expensive cities in the world. But also among the richest, meaning those with the highest quality of life as well as the highest density of millionaires. Why is that actually so, when less than 150 years ago, due to poverty, more people emigrated from here than immigrated? How did Zurich become one of the most important financial centers in the world? How did we once compensate for our lack of raw materials? What does neutrality have to do with it all? What about ETH, sports, or the art market? And what are probably the best financial investments for the future? What did ETH, sports, or the art market contribute to today's prosperity? Tobias Straumann, Professor of Economic History at the University of Zurich, and Andrea Weidemann, Head of the Swiss Finance Museum, discuss this in our exhibition at the National Museum – linking to objects from 5000 years of Zurich history. The event is part of the series "Cantonal Stories": Here, Einfach Zürich presents institutions that also convey Zurich history and lets them engage in dialogue on a current topic.
