VK Action – The Fate of Collections from Abolished Monasteries

Description

The material cultural wealth gathered in monasteries over centuries had an incalculable financial value. It included picture galleries, sculptural decorations, items for conducting liturgy, extensive libraries, and much more (e.g., study collections of educational institutions). This movable property needed to be urgently cleared from monastic buildings – following Action K, Action VK = the clearing of monasteries was precisely planned and chaotically executed. Based on what decisions and through what paths did thousands (in the case of books, tens of thousands) of artifacts travel, and where did they end up? How were paintings, carved works, reliquaries, chalices, or monstrances made of precious metals, or embroidered vestments handled? What happened to the vast library halls full of old books that Marxist science considered worthless? All this will be illuminated in the final lecture of the series on the Dissolution of Monasteries.
