The Dissolution of Monasteries or Actions K and VK – Communist Repression Against Male and Female Religious Orders in 1950 and the Dispersal of Their Cultural Assets Male and female religious orders and congregations were perceived by the communist regime as particularly dangerous political enemies. Their members lived according to strict religious rules, adhered to well-organized order structures, and were subject to the highest authority, the Pope. Therefore, the goal of the repressive policy of the consolidating totalitarian regime was the complete abolition of religious life – the repressive apparatus strained its forces in 1950 to erase religious men and women as a social group from society and to promote the 'useful utilization' of their monasteries. The lecture series will demonstrate the differentiated approach of the state towards male and female religious orders and explain how artistic and historical monuments from the monasteries were handled. 1/ Action K – The Dissolution of Male and Female Monasteries and the Fates of Religious Men and Women
