There are many beautiful voices, especially in jazz today more than ever. Viktoria Tolstoy, however, is unique: she is the great melodramatist of jazz, and Pat Metheny told her after a performance: "When you sing, the sun rises." A bipolar musician who can make the happiness fragile and threatened like no other, and the bitter sound enchanting and beautiful. She has also framed and perfected this art conceptually since she became an ACT artist in 2003: whether she focused on material from Esbjörn Svensson, whose e. s. t. was, in a way, her accompanying trio when it started, or recently Herbie Hancock, on classical templates, Swedish standards, or repertoire from Russia, the homeland of her ancestors.
Her new album "A Moment Of Now" is now as open as never before, for a simple reason: "The concept this time is Jacob and me," says Viktoria. An intimate duo album, focusing entirely on Viktoria Tolstoy's long-standing musical partnership with pianist Jacob Karlzon. Karlzon's playing also lives from the nuances, transitions, the ambiguous – whether the 43-year-old sits at the piano, Fender Rhodes, synthesizer, or celesta glockenspiel, and is inspired by classics like Ravel or hard rockers like KoRn. He has been Tolstoy's companion for almost 15 years, and he will probably remain so, even if he, like Esbjörn Svensson before, is now also successful under his own name – see Jacob Karlzon 3 "More". "One usually knows beforehand what the other will think and do, without either having to say anything. It's almost a bit ghostly," explains Tolstoy, laughing, about the silent understanding between them.
