An open mind – Sheku Kanneh-Mason's rise to one of the most prominent cellists of our time has been meteoric: in 2016, at the age of 17, he was named BBC Young Musician of the Year, in 2018 he made a widely acclaimed appearance at a royal wedding, and in 2020 he entered the UK album charts with his "Elgar" album – the first cellist in the history of the Top Ten and the first classical instrumentalist in over 30 years. The public learned not only about the charismatic artist from Nottingham but also about his down-to-earth musical family, which made the training of a whole group of highly gifted siblings possible with impressive dedication. As soon as Sheku Kanneh-Mason bows, the otherwise so composed, unpretentious young musician ignites – whether he seeks partnership in chamber music or performs as a soloist with major orchestras. "Kanneh-Mason's cello tone is an event, it drills into the eardrums, makes them vibrate," wrote Alexander Dick in the Badische Zeitung on the occasion of his Albert debut in 2024. Despite all stylistic curiosity, the versatile artist remains true to works that have shaped him for a long time – including the two preserved cello concertos by Joseph Haydn, which still set standards for expressiveness, balance, and virtuosic elegance today. He is accompanied by the Verbier Festival Chamber Orchestra, an ensemble composed of members of international top orchestras, celebrated under its chief conductor Gábor Takács-Nagy as one of the leading chamber orchestras in the world. Haydn he has played most often, especially string quartets and chamber music, says Kanneh-Mason: "It is a language I know and love."
