This “Homage to Martin Luther King” brings a dramatic piece of history to life through words and gospel music. From King's political beginnings with the Montgomery bus boycott to his world-famous “I Have a Dream” speech and the Nobel Peace Prize, a long journey is depicted. The fatal shots on John F. Kennedy foreshadow his own violent end. Yet, undeterred, Martin Luther King fought for his vision of justice and peace. Vera Bauer dedicates a powerful portrait of Martin Luther King’s life. Joined by the renowned Zurich jazz singer Christina Jaccard and the outstanding jazz pianist Dave Ruosch—both Swiss Jazz Award winners and brilliant interpreters of African American music—as well as the notable drummer Steve Grant, the artists bring to life the life and legacy of the murdered Martin Luther King in words and gospel music. Vera Bauer presents her word-and-music programs, bringing the works and visions of authors, writers, and influential personalities from various eras to the stage. Their life themes gain compelling presence through Vera Bauer’s conception and interpretation. Born in Cleveland, USA, raised near Stuttgart, with a cello diploma from the Freiburg University of Music, she has performed at the Freiburg Theatre and the Freies Theater Zurich. She trained as a speaker and reciter in Freiburg and Zurich. www.verabauer.ch The singer Christina Jaccard, living in Zurich and New York, grew up in a musical family and was exposed to jazz, blues, and gospel from an early age. A classical career was within her reach, but she abandoned her opera singing training to pursue her own artistic path—and thus developed into one of the most distinctive voices in Swiss music. Her voice is considered a unique blend of sensitivity, strength, and authenticity. Known as the “blackest of all white voices,” she conveys vitality and emotional depth, allowing the audience to feel the sincerity of Black Music directly. Her expressive power and unmistakable stage presence enable her to deeply touch people. She has been awarded the first prize at the Interpop Festival in Budapest and, together with David Ruosch, the Swiss Jazz Award. www.voicejaccard.ch Dave Ruosch, (David), is a freelance pianist, composer, songwriter, and music educator specializing in traditional blues and jazz piano music. During his studies at the Zurich Conservatory (1984–1988), Ruosch was hired as a pianist and arranger by the rock 'n' roll band “Terry & The Hot Sox” and as a drummer by “Eric Lee.” In 2012, he was awarded the Swiss Jazz Award together with his long-time stage partner Christina Jaccard. In 2009, he won the VIENNA BLUES AWARD with the band “Norbert Schneiders R & B Caravan.” He is regarded across Europe as a top stylist and authentic representative of boogie-woogie, blues, stride, and swing. Besides active concert work with his trio, as a soloist, and with international bands and star musicians, Dave Ruosch teaches jazz piano at the MKZ (Music School Zurich Conservatory) and is a lecturer for didactics and traditional jazz piano at the Zurich University of the Arts. Steve Grant was born in 1966 in Liverpool, England, and has been active in the music industry for over four decades. Since starting his professional career at age 15, he has collaborated live and in the studio with artists like Ben E. King, Screamin’ Jay Hawkins, Gene “Mighty Flea” Conners, Mari Wilson, DK4, Bastian Baker, Henri Dès, The Kruger Brothers, Polo Hofer, Stereodogs, Electric Dog Allstars, and many others. He has performed at thousands of concerts worldwide, including the North Sea Jazz Festival, Olympia, Glastonbury, and the London Palladium. Between 1982 and 1995, he played over 3,000 concerts with his first bands Supercharge and Juke.
