Union Duke consists of two-fifths country, two-fifths city, and one-fifth whisky. They are described as a rough collision of alt-rock and twang that gets crowds roaring with heartfelt songs. With captivating harmonies, driving rhythms, and contagious enthusiasm, the five guys have been delighting audiences across Canada and the rest of the world for over a decade and a half. After four albums, many singles, countless festival appearances, thousands of records sold, and hundreds of thousands of miles traveled, the band is excited to tour with new music and gain new fans on the endless highway. In 2026, they will tour Canada in winter and spring, play festivals all summer, and head to Europe in the fall. In January 2026, Union Duke released UD IV, their fourth studio album and first major release in a decade. It marks a personal change for the guys, as the original bassist Will “The Milk” Staunton left the band during recording. The album was completed by the remaining four members Matt Warry-Smith, Ethan Smith, Jim McDonald, and Rob McLaren, supplemented by Ian McKeown on bass, Aaron Goldstein (who also produced the album at his Gold Standard Recorders studio) on steel guitar, and Joel Visentin on keyboards and accordion. They are now different people, but rumors suggest they still behave just like before. Musically, the guys drew from many sources to distill this collection of sounds and texts. On UD IV, they reflect on love, romantic love, brotherly love, lost love, love that could never be, love viewed through the bottom of a bottle, cooled love, and love for coffee (once again). The core principles of Union Duke – playing together and singing from the heart, ideally in harmony – still prevail, sometimes accompanied by driving rock grooves, woven with organ and guitar riffs, or simply brought live on stage as if thrown into a kitchen party heated by fiddle and banjo. Throughout, the band encourages you to hold on to the things and people that make you feel alive, because later you might not have the chance anymore.
