Huppert once again delivers a fascinatingly opaque performance as a working-class housewife who helps a neighbor with an abortion and soon realizes she has stumbled upon a goldmine. As the business flourishes (meanwhile, rooms are rented to prostitutes), her husband returns from war captivity. Rendered financially and sexually redundant, he betrays her to the authorities, who make an example of her.
