"True Crime Talk: When Fiction Meets Reality – How Real Does a Thriller Have to Be?"

Description

The bestselling author in conversation with Jürgen Schmidt, former police chief, about investigator work and perpetrator psychology. Charlotte Link immerses herself in the structures of the police apparatus as a thriller author to depict her investigators' procedures as authentically as possible. Jürgen Schmidt looks back on 45 years of service, nearly 25 of which as police chief in Gifhorn, Lower Saxony. He knows the daily routine of criminal investigation from personal experience and can tell about investigations in real criminal cases, as well as the psychology of perpetrators. To coincide with the release of Charlotte Link's new book "Kalte Tage," we bring both worlds together on one stage: Charlotte Link and Jürgen Schmidt discuss how far reality and fiction can diverge in a thriller, where strict factual accuracy reaches its limits, and where artistic freedom begins. What must a thriller know to be credible? And what must it invent for a case to become a story? Charlotte Link is one of the most successful German-speaking authors of today. Her psychological thrillers combine precise social observation with great narrative tension; many of her books have topped bestseller lists and have been adapted into films. With the Kate Linville series, she has created an investigator whose cases are not only about crimes but also about fear, guilt, loneliness, and the darker sides of seemingly orderly lives. The conversation is expertly moderated by Giuseppe Di Grazia, deputy editor-in-chief of the "stern."
