Description

ELISA is a project featuring cellist and singer Elisa Herbig. In the compositions of the German-American, who lived in Norway for 10 years, expansiveness blends with profundity and nonchalance to create a very personal sound universe. Beatboxing and electronic elements give the music a driving force and contrast with the melodic lines of the cello and voice. The deep frequencies of the electric bass provide a solid foundation. The harmonies of the electric organ create sound carpets that convey expansiveness and are complemented by playful moments with jazz hints. The English lyrics describe the inner confrontation of the narrator with experiences of encounter, boundaries, distance, and closeness. The audience is taken on a journey that touches, entertains, and broadens musical horizons. Elisa Herbig (cello and vocals) studied cello at the Hochschule für Musik Carl Maria von Weber in Dresden with Prof. Peter Bruns and Prof. Wolfgang-Emanuel Schmidt. An Erasmus year brought her to the music college in Oslo, Norway. There she remained for the first 10 years of her professional life as a freelance musician and gained intensive experience in Scandinavian music, both classical and jazz/rock/pop. As a musician, she traveled through Scandinavia, Europe, and the USA, always balancing between her classical instrument, the cello, and the world of pop and jazz. She has worked as a studio musician and band/project member with Øystein Sevåg, Anette Askvik, Marianne Sveen (Katzenjammer), Siri Nilsen, Benedicte Torget, Julie Falkevik, and Fay Wildhagen, among others. After returning to Germany in 2016, she completed a master's degree in music therapy and founded her first musical project, ELISA. As a bandleader, Elisa Herbig sings and writes the lyrics and music for her project. In summer 2021, she will release her debut album. Johannes Bartmes (piano and percussion) lived in New York in the 1990s and studied piano and composition with jazz greats like Jimmy Heath, Maria Schneider, Kenny Werner, Joe Lovano, and many others. He is now settled with his family in Heidelberg. Since 1999, he has composed stage music and been responsible for musical direction of theater productions at Schauspiel Frankfurt, Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe, Theater Heidelberg, Theater Heilbronn, Theater Koblenz, Rheinisches Landestheater Neuss, and Künstlerhaus Mousonturm Frankfurt. He also founded his own music label, "Blisstone," and performs as a musician with the band project "Cobody" and the electro-jazz formation "bartmes." With "bartmes," he has already released his fifth CD. Matthias Debus (bass) hails from Speyer and studied jazz double bass at the Hochschule für Musik Würzburg with Prof. Rudi Engel. Since 2002, he has lived in Mannheim and has become a fixture in the regional jazz scene. He plays, for example, in the Alexandra Lehmler Quartet, Black Project, Dirik Schilgen Jazzgrooves, and Netnar Tsinim. Matthias Debus's work is characterized by cross-genre projects. His range extends from orchestral collaborations to jazz, world music, and lyrical compositions, as well as rock and avant-garde. He is also passionate about music education for children. Besides his work as an instrumental teacher at various music schools in the region, he introduces young listeners to jazz with his band "Herr Hering, die liebe Frau Gerburg & die Jazzband." In addition to various project-related roles as a double bassist and arranger, he is a founding member of the Hermann-Art Collective, which aims to combine jazz with other art genres.
