Description

Founded in 2010 in Warsaw, the Atom String Quartet is today one of the most fascinating string quartets of the present day – and at the same time one of Poland's most prominent jazz formations. Dawid Lubowicz and Mateusz Smoczyński (violin), Michał Zaborski (viola), and Krzysztof Lenczowski (cello), all graduates of the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music, combine classical precision with the freedom of improvisation.
Since winning the Grand Prix at the Bielska Zadymka Jazz Festival in 2011, the ensemble has been present on international stages. Five albums document their stylistic openness; two of them have been awarded the Polish music prize Fryderyk Award. In 2019, they dedicated themselves to the works of Krzysztof Penderecki in their own improvisational arrangements with "Penderecki".
Followed by "Karłowicz Recomposed" in collaboration with the Mieczysław Karłowicz Philharmonic and "Essence" (2022), a summary of their first decade. In 2021, they performed together with Hania Rani Max Richter's "Testament" – a homage to Penderecki.
The Atom String Quartet stands for sonic curiosity, virtuosity, and music that merges jazz, classical, and folk sounds into an unmistakable whole.
