Three musicians, three origins, one language. The Ukrainian pianist Andrii Pokaz, the German multi-instrumentalist Sebastian Studnitzky, and the drummer and percussionist Bodek Janke meet where borders become meaningless: in musical improvisation.
Pokaz and Studnitzky, who is also the artistic director of BlackForestJazz, know each other from a time when their realities could hardly be more different: one in Ukraine, at war – the other in Berlin. It was precisely in this tension that the two musicians found the foundation of their joint playing. Their duo stands for immediacy: compositions as a starting point, the moment as the true form. Bodek Janke, recipient of the Jazz Prize Baden-Württemberg and featured on over 200 albums, brings a rhythmic global language that reflects his life journey: from Kazakhstan via Poland, Bad Herrenalb, and Cologne to New York – and finally to Berlin. His playing combines jazz, Indian tabla, and free improvisation into a language that owes nothing to a single origin.
What unites the Trio Pokaz/Studnitzky/Janke is not a concept – it is an attitude. Curiosity instead of categories. Listening instead of claiming. And a trust in the moment that can be heard and felt.
