based on Victorien Sardou's "Vissi d’arte, vissi d’amore" – "For art I have lived and for love I have lived". In a dictatorship, the singer Floria Tosca fights for her great love, the painter Cavaradossi. Threatened by the unscrupulous police chief Baron Scarpia, she sees no other way out than to kill him. Nevertheless, her love for Cavaradossi remains unfulfilled: contrary to the previous agreement, his execution is not faked, but the bullet hits him fatally. Tosca desperately throws herself into death. Giacomo Puccini learned the material from a theatrical performance with Sarah Bernhardt in the title role. Enthralled by her interpretation, he immediately began composing. The world premiere of Tosca in January 1900 marked the beginning of Puccini's most performed work to date. It offers space for intense emotions and dramatic tension, combining passionate melodies with explicitly depicted brutality.
