Description
The Bernese photographer Beat Jost (1936-2026) was one of the most important advertising and documentary photographers and worked for many important Bernese companies (Loeb department store, Wander-Ovomaltine, Vidmar, IBA, Pierrot-Friola, etc.). His photographs exemplarily capture the object world and advertising aesthetics of the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s. Created for brochures, catalogs, newspaper ads, and various printed materials, they were omnipresent in the consumer and goods world of that time. At the same time, they reflect a phase of unprecedented prosperity in Switzerland. Through the careful staging of products in a social context, they have become insightful visual contemporary witnesses today. In the current view, these images experience a shift in reception: they are no longer primarily perceived as advertising carriers – especially since many of the depicted products have disappeared from the market – but as memory images and time capsules that evoke individual as well as collective memory. The exhibition honors Beat Jost's work, which has not yet been comprehensively presented in a solo exhibition in Bern. It makes these photographic time documents accessible to a wide audience and invites a journey into the consumer and prosperity years of the post-war period.
