The 3rd Tolkien Conference Switzerland 2027 will take place in Lucerne on Saturday, March 13, 2027, under the theme “Maps & Landscapes in Tolkien’s Middle-earth.” The conference explores the role of maps, landscapes, geography, and real-world places in the works of J. R. R. Tolkien. A special focus is on Tolkien’s journey through Switzerland in the summer of 1911, which many scholars associate with the imaginative landscapes of Rivendell, the Misty Mountains, and other locations in Middle-earth. This academic event brings together international scholars, lecturers, authors, and interested readers. It is organized in an academic setting at Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts, in cooperation with partners from Switzerland and abroad, including the University of Lausanne and Friedrich Schiller University Jena. The program includes lectures, discussions, new research perspectives, and opportunities for exchange. The conference is intended for both an academic audience and Tolkien enthusiasts interested in literature, cartography, landscape, and the creation of Middle-earth. The conference language is English. Attendance is free of charge; registration is required. An optional public evening event launching the Lucerne Tolkien Portal will take place starting at 7:15 p. m. at the Swiss Museum of Transport in Lucerne.
