Description
Shirana Shahbazi (*1974) has a nuanced perspective on our society and its challenges. Her multifaceted work establishes fragmentation and overlay as strategies to address a complex present. Based on her experience of multiple affiliations, she examines the construction of reality. How can the simultaneous experience of different realities be depicted in images? How can spatial and emotional distances be captured? Always starting from photography, but incorporating various techniques and materials, Shahbazi's work resists easy categorization; it conveys multiplicity as a political stance. Shahbazi, who experiments with surfaces, formats, color, space, and light, has never shown many of her works. In dialogue with Li Tavor (*1983), complemented by additional works, the artist creates immersive installations. In 2019, Shahbazi was awarded the Prix Meret Oppenheim, the most important art prize in Switzerland, by the Federal Office of Culture.
