Thomas Mann's famous novella from 1930 was read as a political allegory of the emerging fascism in Europe immediately after its publication. The story raises questions about the manipulability of the individual within a group and illustrates how easily people can be seduced. A good reason for our theater to include this reading in the program. In the novella, the magician Cipolla plays the role of the authoritarian seducer, who uses skilled hypnosis to make his audience in the fictional Italian seaside resort Torre di Venere behave completely irrationally. The story is told from the perspective of a German tourist who spends his vacation with his family in the mentioned resort.
