GÖTEBORGER SCHOOL RELOADED The Swedish Melodic Death Allstars The Halo Effect have shaken up the scene with their albums "Days Of The Lost" (2022) and "March Of The Unheard" (2025). Now they come as the headliners of a top-notch package to us at Z7. As special guests, they bring the Italian Heavy-Goth-Alternative-Metallers Lacuna Coil and the Finnish Melodeath band Omnium Gatherum to Pratteln. Started in 2029 as a fun project among friends, The Halo Effect quickly became one of the most popular bands in the Melodic Death genre. Before forming the quintet, the musicians were already active in popular bands like In Flames or Dark Tranquility and played a key role in establishing the legendary "Gothenburg School" in the 90s. According to singer Mikael Stanne, the band "wanted to do nothing new. We just wanted to showcase our strengths and create music that feels good." This led to the 2021 single "Shadowminds," which quickly streamed in the millions. Their debut album "Days Of The Lost" was nominated for a Swedish Grammy in 2022 and promoted on tours with bands like Machine Head, Amon Amarth, and Meshuggah. They also won the Metal Hammer Award in 2024 in the "Rising Stars" category. The rise of the all-star band was rapid. "I liked that everything was completely new on our first album," says singer Mikael Stanne, who previously spent many years with the Melodeath pioneers Dark Tranquillity. "We didn't know exactly what we wanted to do. It was just a lot of fun. But then you suddenly have to produce a successor to an album that was named Album of the Year by the biggest magazine in Sweden. You ask yourself: OK, how do we do this now?" The solution was quickly found: stay true to the roots while expanding your own visions. Thus, "March Of The Unheard" became a triumphant follow-up, containing everything that helped the debut break through quickly. Songs like "Detonate" and "What We Become" carry the hallmarks of the Gothenburg sound, with cutting guitar riffs, energetic drums, and sing-along choruses that have made generations of metalheads addicted. Other highlights build on these captivating foundations and go even further. "Between Directions," for example, adds orchestral strings that fit perfectly into The Halo Effect's energetic repertoire. Progressive synthesizers wobble at the beginning of the opener "Conspire To Deceive," "Our Channel To The Darkness" explodes from contemplative acoustic guitars into a heavy metal storm, and with the instrumental "Coda," the album finds a choral and symphonic conclusion. "March Of The Unheard" is not only another masterpiece of Gothenburg Melodeath; it also shows that, 30 years after the genre's breakthrough, the musicians still have plenty of fresh ideas to keep this style of music moving forward.
