Resounding anticipation – A new beginning is rarely easy – and it becomes even less so when it takes place after more than half a century of a life's work. It is all the more exciting that at the Freiburg Concert Hall, one can witness the new chapter in Sir John Eliot Gardiner's life and work. During a phase of artistic and personal redefinition, Gardiner found strength in his roots: in his origin from the agricultural community of Dorset, where he spent his youth at the garden-encompassing family estate Springhead. This is the guiding star for the Constellation Orchestra and the Constellation Choir, founded in August 2024. International young singers and instrumentalists meet personalities from top-tier ensembles with whom Gardiner has previously collaborated. The organization Springhead Constellation aims to connect music, art, and ideas in a transformative way. "Music creates a sense of reverence and mystery," says Gardiner, "it enhances our awareness of connectedness with nature." The new success story started with a celebrated Christmas tour, not by chance – as traditional nativity plays and concerts are among the formative childhood memories of the seasoned artist. Gardiner will perform a concert at Albert with a carefully selected, slender formation of his ensembles, capturing the joyful anticipation of the Advent season in festive tones. As is fitting for Christmas gifts, the anticipation of the precious content is cultivated. The spiritual framework is already set: works by Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina, William Byrd, Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck, and other masters from five centuries form the musical foundation of this concert. Yet, there is room for surprise and discovery – for those tonal treasures that only reveal themselves fully at the moment of sounding. The richness of music history and the skill of the performers set no limits. Program:
