The literary voice of the Beat Generation William S. Burroughs, rock legend Tom Waits, and director Robert Olivier Tambosi Wilson created a cult musical in Hamburg in 1990 with "The Black Rider," which is now finally also being shown in Winterthur. Carl Maria von Weber's "Freischütz" is transformed here into a darkly absurd parable with a magnificent soundtrack.

What happens when you run the romantic opera "Der Freischütz" through the nightmare machine of the 20th century? "The Black Rider" does exactly that. The plot remains close to the original: The young writer Wilhelm makes a pact with the devil out of love for the forester's daughter, who helps him with magical bullets. They hit every desired target – except one: The last bullet is controlled by the devil himself...

The music is by Tom Waits, who with his distinctive style between blues, ballad, and dark variety is considered one of the most idiosyncratic figures in the American music scene. Director Olivier Tambosi and conductor Iwan Wassilevski interpret the work in a new way. After the audience hits "Cabaret" and "Im weißen Rössl," we are already showing the third production of this successful team.
