Description

As part of MONO:MONO German, English surtitles Maureen has been in prison for over 25 years, sentenced to life imprisonment for murder. She is an artist, paints, plays the piano, loves papaya, the blue hour, and sunsets in Minnesota. For several years, she has maintained a pen pal friendship with Markus, who is part of a theater collective. When Maureen asked if she had any thoughts on the theme of the Monologue Festival 2025 "I WANT TO BELIEVE," she promptly wrote: "that sounds absolutely fantastic." Over a year, the correspondence follows the exchange about everyday life and setbacks in the lives of Markus and Maureen and the trail of caring for someone you hardly know. Maureen ends each of her letters with "Take Care & Stay Safe." She was already the protagonist of the theater evening DIE BRIEFFREUNDSCHAFT (2021). The shared reflection on freedom and possession via letter with women incarcerated in the USA offers new perspectives that shake up the self-evident and self-image and turn our view of values in unforeseen directions. Together, the collective stands for a unique form of documentary theater and passionate investigation. The work is characterized by intensive research - captured on a video level, which is a fundamental building block of the productions. The theater context is crucial for access to reality.
