A great event. Those who hear the "voices" understand that we become richer through Ukraine and that it lives within us.
Wolfgang Eichwede, founder of the Eastern Europe Research Center, Bremen Since February 24, 2022, the world has changed. Even here, we feel the effects of Russia's unleashed war against its neighbor. But what do we really know about Ukraine – beyond the daily horror reports?
Russia's war is not only against land and people but also affects Ukrainian culture and its independent history. Yet, in Ukraine, a relentless pursuit of freedom and democracy has developed over centuries, unlike almost anywhere else in the world. Stages on this path included the free Cossack republic of the 17th century and in our time, the Revolution of Dignity on Kyiv's Maidan.
Berlin actors Jan Uplegger and Mareile Metzner will take you on a literary tour through Ukraine. Musical contributions to this journey come from Ukrainian singers Nataliia Kuprynenko, Iryna Lazer, and Iryna Razin, accompanied by the outstanding jazz pianist Yuriy Seredin.
This creates an atmospherically dense portrait of this country in the heart of Europe. Afterwards, we want to engage in a conversation with the audience about Ukraine's past and future. February 24 changed the world.
Ukraine found itself at the epicenter of global attention. But what does the world really know about this country – apart from front-line reports and horrific images of destruction?
Ukraine is a land of incredible ethnic and religious diversity. For centuries, Greeks and Tatars, Armenians and Jews, Poles, Germans, and Ukrainians coexisted here. And it is here, in the heart of the Carpathians, that 19th-century Austrian geographers identified the geographical center of Europe.
But the most defining feature of Ukrainian history has always been the pursuit of freedom. From the free Cossack republic of the 17th century to the Revolution of Dignity in 2004 and the liberation struggle of 2022. It is the path of the indomitable, the path of dignity, the path of culture that has endured despite centuries of bans and destruction.
Today, by listening to German translations of works by Lesya Ukrainka, Ivan Franko, Serhiy Zhadan, Hryhir Tytunyk, Taras Shevchenko, and Mykola Hohol – in an insightful performance by Jan Uplegger and Mareile Metzner – viewers can discover another Ukraine. Deep, cultural, and polyphonic.
From traditional songs, atmospheric music, and the voices of Berlin actors, a portrait of the true Ukraine emerges – proud, sensitive, alive.

The event takes place at the Wallgraben Theater in Freiburg im Breisgau and offers a deep insight into Ukrainian culture and history. After the performance, there will be an opportunity to discuss Ukraine's past and future with the audience.
