Somatic Shrines for Crip Times is an immersive performance and exhibition inspired by the concept of a shrine, honoring the life experiences of people with disabilities. The project creates an aesthetic language for what disability feels like, making it visible through performance, digital art, and health promotion. The performance consists of offerings to imaginary avatars associated with emotions such as joy, grief, and anger within the context of disability experiences. These avatars are digitally projected and appear throughout the piece as embodiments of disability experiences and wisdom. Each performer presents a specific offering to their avatar through personal gestures and choreographies derived from their own experiences, translating emotions into color, visual animation, and form. The audience is seated in various accessible seats while the avatars move among the performers, creating a speculative space where disability wisdom can be communicated across time and between people. The process aims to facilitate participation for people with disabilities and capture subtle emotions and sensory experiences from their own lives. Some aspects of the production are created in domestic and virtual settings, acknowledging that not all people with disabilities can travel or leave their homes. Elements of the piece are developed through accessibility-focused practices, including choreography based on disability experiences, mask-wearing, and COVID testing. The performance serves as a means to convey realities that remain socially invisible but are visceral, vibrant, and present just beneath the surface. Duration: 90 minutes
