For their sound, the Canadian twin sisters Mercedes and Phoenix Arn-Horn have coined their own term: "Riotgaze". Since their formation in 2020, it's never just about music. Feminism, social inequality, identity, and self-empowerment are as consistently reflected in their songs as distorted guitars and catchy melodies. After several EPs, Softcult released their debut album "When A Flower Doesn't Grow" in January 2026. The title symbolizes the central idea of the album. It's not the person who needs to change if they can't grow in their environment, but the conditions that prevent them from doing so. Musically, Softcult has become harder and more atmospheric. Behind the scenes, Softcult largely maintain control over their work themselves. Phoenix produces the recordings, the sisters design their artworks together, and the videos are mostly created independently. This DIY attitude directly connects to the Riot Grrrl ethos that has always characterized the duo.
