"SING, TO OPEN MY HEART"
klangwerk LIED celebrates 15 years of song evening series with large ensemble and piano four hands BRAHMS - LIEBESLIEDERWALZER and other quartets and duets The Freiburg concert series klangwerk LIED celebrates its fifteenth anniversary! Founded in 2011 out of enthusiasm for the art song, it has since dedicated itself to this genre, which, despite its emotional density and closeness to the audience, often lies dormant like Sleeping Beauty and receives comparatively little space in the usual concert life. Through innovative, stimulating, critical, or topical themed evenings beyond common formats, many prize winners of international singing and song competitions invited to Freiburg, and a total of about 75 song evenings, the klangwerk LIED series has long established itself as a fixture in Freiburg's cultural life. For the anniversary, a lively and multi-voiced celebration is planned: Four singers and two pianists at the grand piano will shape the evening together. The focus is on duets and quartets: framed by Brahms' Liebeslieder-Walzer and Neue Liebeslieder for four voices and piano four hands. They are flanked by duets by Mendelssohn, Schumann, and Fauré. Two discoveries complement the program. The Swiss Hans Huber (1852-1921) shaped the musical life of his country as director of the Basel Conservatory and co-founder of the Swiss Musicians' Association. His vocal quartets op. 69 use the same instrumentation as the Liebeslieder-Walzer and are unmistakably inspired by Brahms but take their own sonic paths towards the turn of the century. Gustav Jenner (1865-1920) was the only composition student Johannes Brahms personally taught for an extended period. Introduced by the poet Klaus Groth, Jenner, born on Sylt, came to Vienna in 1888, where Brahms regularly reviewed his works. From 1895, he worked as university music director in Marburg and wrote over 150 songs as well as numerous vocal and chamber music works. He published little during his lifetime, and his work is still rarely heard today. The performers of the evening are soprano Katharina Persicke (Freiburg), mezzo-soprano Debora Kapsner (Heidelberg), tenor Falk Hoffmann (Leipzig), and baritone Georg Gädker (Mannheim), accompanied two- and four-handed on piano by the Freiburg song accompanists Carl-Martin Buttgereit and Philip Rivinius. A vocal-instrumental fireworks!
