Cinema as it used to be – music as it sounds today: On Sunday, October 4, 2026, at 5:00 p.m., the Reformed Church Messen will become a cinema hall. The silent film classic Sherlock Jr. by Buster Keaton from 1924 will be shown. Michael Mikolaschek will accompany the film live on the church organ, complemented by electronic and theatrical sound effects. Buster Keaton, alongside Charlie Chaplin and Laurel and Hardy, was one of the great stars of the silent film era. He became famous for his expressionless face, dry humor, and spectacular stunts, often performed by himself. In Sherlock Jr., he plays a shy film projectionist who dreams of being a detective. Dream, film, and reality blend in a surprising and highly comical way. Michael Mikolaschek is known for his unusual and improvisational sound worlds on the church organ. The music arises directly from the action on the screen and combines the diverse tonal colors of the organ with atmospheric layers and free improvisation. At selected points, the synthesizer is added: with additional sounds and theatrical effects, it musically picks up Keaton's surprising ideas and spectacular stunts and enhances their impact. Thus, a film from over 100 years ago meets music that is created only at the moment of the performance.
