Description
Martha wanders the streets of Schöneberg, ragged and torn. Everyone knows her, but no one knows who she really is: a millionaire – but not only that. Shelly Kupferberg talks in an interview with Monika Schärer about "Hours like Days," how she uncovered Martha's secret. Berlin, in the 1940s: Martha E. is diligent and extremely frugal. Good qualities for the position of caretaker she holds in the Schöneberg rental house of the Berkowitz brothers. Liane Berkowitz comes from a good family, a curious and lively girl who, in the middle of the war, learns about love – and resistance against the National Socialists. Martha, the ragged house owner, witnesses Liane's fateful life. How Martha went from caretaker to house owner is told by Shelly Kupferberg in her novel, for which she researched meticulously. She recalls Martha's appearance: "Her name was Martha, she had long white tangled hair down to her knees and looked like a city tramp. Yet she was supposedly a millionaire. It was said she owned a residential building that she had 'slept through' during the Nazi era. That made me curious. Who was this woman really, I wanted to know." © Image: Heike Steinweg/ Diogenes Verlag Participants and additional information: Shelly Kupferberg, Monika Schärer
