Schattenwesen – From Ghost Photography to the Phantoms of the Algorithm

Ghostly beings haunt digital images: algorithmic figures lurk in photorealistic computer games, cryptids nest in datasets, and ghostly figures emerge through AI prompts. Schattenwesen explores the spectrum from the algorithmic phantoms of the present to the ghost photography of the 19th century, showing how images summon beings that inhabit our personal, social, and political subconscious. The exhibition shifts the focus from the promise of light to the shadows where ghostly and non-human entities shape our view of images and our shared ideas. The exhibition features works by Cihad Caner, Nina Davies, Trevor Paglen, Mario Santamaría, Janne Schimmel, Steph Maj Swanson, Shannon Taggart, Agate Tūna, and Sheung Yiu. The project is in collaboration with Kutxa Fundazioa and is the second edition of [permanent beta].
