Shame is a strange thing: it makes us blush, fall silent, lower our gaze or want to disappear. And at the same time, it tells us quite a lot about what we consider right and wrong, desirable and embarrassing, normal and deviant. What happens when we approach shame literarily? Where is it actually located – in the body, in our memories, or in the gaze of others? And what does our shame have to do with the stories we read and tell? This evening will examine shame from different perspectives: The author Lea Schneider deals in her essay "Shame" with an emotion that can leave us speechless, and with the possibilities of transforming it into language. Christine Koschmieder offers her literary perspective on shame and sex, and Tia Morgen openly discusses shaming and its socio-political relevance on social media. Additionally, the hosts of the podcast Feminist Shelf Control ask what shame has to do with our reading habits: Which books do we read secretly? Which stories do we prefer not to share? And with which texts might we think: I really shouldn't be ashamed of that. An evening about red cheeks, lowered gazes, and the need to sink into the ground – and about what happens when we still write and talk about it.
