Description
While equestrian sports are nowadays dominated by women, the ability to control a horse was historically seen as a sign of male strength and superiority. However, women did not let this stop them from riding. They used the ladies' saddle to be on horseback despite societal conventions. The origins of the ladies' saddle and the development of female equestrianism in Europe are the focus of Bettina E. Keil-Steentjes's lecture, a historian and expert in riding culture. In the series "Theme of the Month," she sheds light on previously unknown aspects and explores how women in positions of power used riding to assert themselves in the saddle of power.
