SALT OF THE EARTH, Red & Black – Hollywood's Left and the Blacklist from 1.10. – 04.11.2026 at Kino REX Bern

Description

Rarely has Hollywood been so political – and so dangerous for those working there. During the era of the infamous Hollywood Blacklist (1947–1960), creatives were subjected to unprecedented abuse of state and industry power. This year's Locarno Film Festival looked back at this period in a comprehensive retrospective; we are showing a selection of nine films. For the opening, we will screen SALT OF THE EARTH (US 1954) by Herbert J. Biberman on 1.10.26 at 18:00.
A collective project by several Blacklist artists and a key work of American independent filmmaking: In a striking mining community in New Mexico, women begin to assert themselves in a world long considered a men's domain. Introduction to the retrospective by Phuong Le.
