Season Opening with Mahler's Resurrection Symphony

Gustav Mahler's Second Symphony is the flagship of this season. With it, chief conductor Michael Sanderling sets a course for monumental large ensembles: over 100 musicians, choir, and two soloists come together in a grand display of superlatives – for an approximately one-and-a-half-hour journey from the solemn funeral march to the overwhelming resurrection finale. With Anna Lapkovskaja in the “Urlicht” of the fourth movement, Lucerne's star soprano Regula Mühlemann, the Zurich Sing-Akademie, and the Collegium Vocale of the Franciscans of Lucerne, the season is already marked by strong voices at the opening. This places a focus on vocal-symphonic works that run as a red thread through the season. The opening is a work by Swiss composer Andrea Lorenzo Scartazzini. His “Torso – Epitaph” is a contemporary commentary on Mahler's Second Symphony: a massive orchestral crescendo is drawn back into a lament – as a prelude to the funeral ceremony with which Mahler's Resurrection Symphony begins.
