But also in his American homeland and many parts of the world, the artist from Arkansas became an icon, an institution of entertainment music. For various reasons, not just because of his music. Johnny Cash experienced great love and triumphs as well as the deepest abysses throughout a full life. He mostly emerged stronger and was even able to celebrate unexpected successes in the autumn of his life. Cash and June Carter accompanied each other through a turbulent life; they were married for 35 years. When June died in May 2003, Johnny followed her only four months later.
