Brilliance of old gold – The impressive Semperoper Dresden undoubtedly ranks among the most beautiful houses an orchestra could wish for. How delightful that the Saxon Elbe Florence regularly dispatches its flagship orchestra, founded in 1548 and praised by Herbert von Karajan as the "glow of old gold," to other renowned concert venues. Thus, the Albert Concert Hall cycle opens with one of the most traditional ensembles in the world. Daniele Gatti, who will be the chief conductor of the Saxon State Orchestra Dresden from the 2024/25 season, first stood at the podium of the orchestra in 2000 – at the invitation of Giuseppe Sinopoli and also with music by Johannes Brahms. While Brahms' 1st Symphony took many years to find its way, the Second was completed after just a few months. Pastoral and longing, dance-like and profound, it remains today the undisputed audience favorite among Brahms' symphonic works. Before that, Ludwig van Beethoven's Violin Concerto from 1806 will be performed, a work without which the pioneering character of Brahms' later Violin Concerto would hardly be conceivable. Beethoven's exuberant creativity demanded forms that challenged and sometimes overwhelmed the listening habits of his time. The dimensions of the concerto make clear that the solo violin here does not take on a decorative role but asserts its equal voice over the scope of a veritable symphony. This work finds an ideal interpreter in star violinist Augustin Hadelich. With "the confidence of a dream-walker who merely smiles at difficulties" (Neue Zürcher Zeitung), the American-born, German-rooted artist approaches every technical challenge with sovereign composure.
