Description
Everything begins promising: the water nymph Rusalka falls in love with a prince, and he feels attracted to her as well. But her father, the water sprite, warns her about the fickle human world. In exchange for her voice, Rusalka receives a human form from the witch Ježibaba. However, to gain a human soul, she must love the prince unconditionally. If he leaves her, Rusalka is cursed! What starts as a fairy-tale love story develops into a tragedy about failing at boundaries and conventions and the ominous obsession of unrequited love. Two worlds, embodied in two beings, attract each other but cannot come together: they destroy each other. Kvapil's libretto skillfully combines fairy-tale elements with symbolism, and Dvořák created a sound world through leitmotif technique that masterfully unites nature, magic, and melancholy. The cleverly orchestrated orchestra part flows gently and mysteriously like water itself, sometimes tender and melancholic, sometimes dramatic and stirring. Wagner's expressive harmony connects Dvořák with his unmistakable own rhythm and melody. Rusalka's "Song to the Moon" is one of the most beautiful arias in opera literature.
