Description

Romulus the Great is the last Western Roman Emperor. He lives secluded at his court and is more interested in his chickens than in world politics. His entourage fears the attack of the Germans. However, Romulus is undeterred by all warnings and enjoys his breakfast in peace. Until the Germans appear on their conquest march. Romulus confesses to his wife that he wants nothing more than the downfall of the Roman Empire, which has brought so much suffering to so many people. Outraged, his court flees. Alone, Romulus encounters his German opponent Odoacer and must realize that he also prefers to submit. Friedrich Dürrenmatt depicts in his "unhistorical historical comedy" the almost utopian image of two war-weary world rulers, who hope for nothing more than the downfall of their own empire.
