Description

In "Refugee Women Share Their Stories," Riccardo Bonfranchi gives voice to those who often remain hidden. Women from Ukraine, Afghanistan, Iraq, Iran, and the Kurdish region speak of war, patriarchal violence, and loss — but also of resilience, encounters, support, and the desire for an autonomous life. The poignant portraits show what it means to leave everything behind: homeland, family, identity. It is not about abstract numbers or political slogans, but about people. About women who are not only victims of their circumstances but survivors, mothers, workers, learners, fighters — women who keep going despite everything. The book creates closeness where there is otherwise distance, and invites us to look more closely: at flight not as an abstract phenomenon but as a concrete experience of people living among us. Also enlightening are the short factual inserts, which provide more information about the events in the respective countries. Riccardo Bonfranchi, born in 1950, raised in Zurich, also attended school there. At age 20, he moved to Cologne to attend the Sports University and decided to stay in Cologne and attend university afterward. He earned two degrees: State Examination for Special Education and a Diploma in Pedagogy (specializing in Heilpädagogik). He then completed a doctorate at the Heilpädagogisch-Erziehungswissenschaftliche Faculty at the University of Cologne. In 2009, he completed a Master in Philosophy and Applied Ethics (ASAE) at the University of Zurich. Until his retirement, he held four positions in the Heilpädagogik field, always in leadership roles. He has published several professional books and two novels. Since 2010, he has been working as a freelance guest lecturer, supervisor, and coach.
