Like a gust of wind, Mira, the new mural by Renée Levi, circles around the small courtyard in the Kunstmuseum Basel | Hauptbau. The painting, a gift from the artist, will be created on site and can be seen from August 30, 2025. "With the spray can, I can draw quickly, drawing in one breath without lifting. There's no time to think, only movement. And with a free mind, I become part of the spray can," says the Basel artist Levi about her action. Levi's painting is only limited by a white frame along the floor and ceiling. It defines the three greenish-gray walls into a wind tunnel that leads from the museum shop around the corners of the inner courtyard to the information desk. The frame is also the only preparation on site. Color choice and line work originate "on spot, in the moment of making," says Levi. "There are no tests and no corrections. What happens, happens and remains so." The idea for the wall work came from the director of the Kunstmuseum Basel, Elena Filipovic: "The small courtyard of the museum is a place of peace and relaxation. I often see visitors reading or resting between exhibitions." Such quiet zones are important for the museum, and Filipovic wanted to pay more attention to the atmosphere. However, the courtyard should, besides its architectural role, also be designated again as a space for art. Thus, the idea was born to commission a work that will adorn this place until renovation." Levi was the obvious choice: "She is an artist living in Basel who is deeply engaged with painting and architecture and brings a feminist perspective that brings the small courtyard to life in a way only she can." Levi has been represented in the collection of the Kupferstichkabinett for some time. In spring 2025, this collection of works on paper was expanded by the purchase of the two large-format paintings Yafa (2004) and Sabine (2010), thereby broadening Levi's position in the collection of the Kunstmuseum Basel. Levi's generous proposal to gift her wall work in the small courtyard to the museum is a sign of mutual appreciation.
