The Ammonite & Thunderbolt exhibition houses rocks from north-western Switzerland that are between 16,000 and 250 million years old. These include the most important groups of microfossils, plants and invertebrates. They also include numerous fossils of sea creatures such as sponges, corals, shells, ammonites and sea urchins from the Jurassic period, when the region was covered by a shallow sea. The area around Basel is extremely rich in fossils. Take a look at spectacular finds from the Triassic period, remarkable ammonites from the Jurassic period as well as corals, brachiopods, shells and echinoderms from different periods of the earth's history. We also present fossils from the clay pits near Allschwil, Triassic plants from Münchenstein and snails from Ice Age deposits in the Basel area. The wide variety of fossils on display enables collectors to compare and identify their own finds. The fossil groups are displayed in 29 showcases and organized by geological age.
