Reading: Ulrike Kriener She is the grande dame of contemporary Italian literature and a fearless feminist intellectual: Dacia Maraini. She spent part of her childhood in a Japanese internment camp, later grew up in Sicily, and has been shaping Italian literature since the 1960s. On her 90th birthday, her story "Ragazze di Palermo" from 2007 is now published in German for the first time (Folio Verlag / translated by Ingrid Ickler). It is the story of five girls growing up in post-war Palermo. Amid poverty, social conventions, and the desire for change, their friendship becomes a safe space and a blueprint for a self-determined life.
