RADIKAL JUNG – Right-wing extremism among youth

Right-wing extremist positions are spreading increasingly among young people. Especially through social media, hate and agitation paired with right-wing content are reaching the mainstream of society. But also in schools and sports, actors from the scene are increasingly active nationwide. The fact that their slogans are resonating more and more with young people is evidenced by recent election results as well as an increase in politically motivated violence. The recent arrests of the 14- to 21-year-old suspected right-wing terrorists of the "Last Defense Wave" demonstrate the extent of this development. The boundaries between digital hate and real attacks are fluid. Researchers and experts observe that a new right-wing extremist generation is organizing and radicalizing online and on the streets. They speak of an unprecedented dimension of propaganda, networking, and violence, targeting refugees, alternative, and queer people. Against this background, Polyformers, in their project "Radikal jung," explore the mechanisms behind this shift to the right in the emerging generation using current examples. They show how the gradual radicalization of young people occurs and what narratives play a role. Which actors are present with what content and activities? How normalized are right-wing positions among youth already, and what are the reasons for this? What motivates them to join the right-wing spectrum? What fears and hopes are involved? And how do politics, society, schools, and families respond? The piece is based on intensive research and was accompanied by the right-wing extremism expert Andreas Speit. Together with three actors, four young people stand on stage, sharing their personal experiences and perspectives on the topic. Along various stations, they connect informative moments with playful and immersive scenes. This bridges external and internal perspectives and creates both substantive and emotional access. They take the audience on a journey into the world of a new right-wing extremist generation. The guest performance "Radikal jung" is presented at the invitation of Teilseiend e. V. – Muslimische Akademie Heidelberg in cooperation with the Heinrich Böll Foundation Baden-Württemberg e. V. and Mosaik Deutschland e. V. at TiK – Theater im Karlstorbahnhof. The project is funded by the Berlin Capital Culture Fund with resources from the Federal Commissioner for Culture and Media, the state of Saxony-Anhalt, the Pankow district office of Berlin, and the city of Halle (Saale).
