At the end of the 1960s, a new generation of Italian architects and designers began to question the conventions of modernism and the logic of the market. This gave rise to Radical Design, an avant-garde movement that saw design as a means of social critique and the development of alternative visions of the future. The practitioners worked alone or in collectives and deliberately crossed the boundaries of architecture and design. Their ideas were expressed in exhibitions and installations, performances, film and photography, fashion, graphics, and publications. The exhibition, which is largely based on the collection and archive of the Vitra Design Museum, highlights the significance of Radical Design in post-war Italy. Through numerous works, documents, and archival materials, Radical Design offers a new perspective on one of the most influential and provocative chapters of design history—and on its relevance today: as a plea for a design that questions conventions, opens new perspectives, and can inspire change.
