Description

Danish architect and designer Verner Panton (1926-1998) is among the most important creators of the 20th century. His work spans furniture, textiles, and lighting to sculptures, constructions, and interiors that have radically redefined the possibilities of design with color and light. In 2026, Panton would have turned 100. The exhibition planned for this occasion at the Schaudepot of the Vitra Design Museum will present Panton's work in a chronological and thematic structure. Key objects such as the Panton Chair (approx. 1956-1967) and the Visiona exhibition (1970) will be the subject of specific chapters. The context of Panton's work, marked by the possibilities offered by new plastics and manufacturing processes, as well as the social upheavals of the post-war period and the enthusiasm for space in what is called the space age, is also examined. The heart of the exhibition consists of the archives of Verner Panton, a large part of which was transferred by the designer to the Vitra Design Museum in 1989. These archives include approximately 680 pieces of furniture, prototypes, and models, over 200 lighting fixtures, and around 40,000 sheets of plans, drawings, correspondence, and business writings. Additionally, the museum's collection includes about 300 fabric samples designed by Verner Panton for the company Mira-X. With its high-quality exhibits, some of which have never been displayed, its contemporary design, and the renewed and growing interest of society in holistic and future-oriented design ideas, the exhibition appeals to a wide audience. Research related to the exhibition and the preparation of content is supported by cooperation with Verner Panton AG in Basel.
