Description

The cabinet exhibition examines the prehistory of the extravagant Patumbah Villa and discusses the colonial connections of the builder Carl F. Grob in Southeast Asia. It presents key parts of the special exhibition «Patumbah is located in Sumatra» (2020/2021) in a concentrated form. Grob was among a number of Swiss who traveled to Sumatra in the second half of the 19th century to seek their fortune. The exhibition explores the lives of the "planters" and their integration into the plantation economy system. People from various cultures were involved in this; many worked under very harsh conditions. Photographs, films, and letters provide insight into everyday work and living conditions in colonial Sumatra. Presented in German and French, with an English handout.
