Description
"After Sauve qui peut (la vie), the second feature film of Godard's 'third wave' brings him back to classical cinema with star casts after a series of video works, even as he continues to playfully ignore the norms and forms of conventional storytelling. Passion seemingly revolves around a filmmaker (Jerzy Radziwiłowicz) working on an unusual production, where classical paintings from Rembrandt to Goya are to be recreated as faithfully as possible in a film studio with costumed extras. As a counterpoint to the artistic work, there is the cacophony of the outside world, represented by the factory next door, whose owner (Michel Piccoli) has fired a stuttering worker (Isabelle Huppert) who protests and begins an affair with the director. Godard stages Passion along his central themes – love, work, cinema – as a study in contrasts that remain unresolved."
