Description

Stephan Thomas was born in 1962 in Chur, where he also grew up and attended schools, interrupted by a short stay in Geneva (1972/73). He completed his Matura at the Bündner Kantonsschule and then studied at the Zurich Conservatory subjects including organ (Janine Lehmann, Rudolf Scheidegger), piano (Rita Kägi), piano pedagogy (Erna Ronca), choir conducting (Klaus Knall), and music theory (Hans Ulrich Lehmann). After passing the teaching diploma for organ, he began a Phil I study at the University of Zurich with subjects history and musicology; at the same time, he prepared for the concert examination in organ and the theory teaching diploma. After his election as organist of the Chur city church St. Martin, he changed his career goals; he gave up the idea of a career as a historian and decided to devote himself professionally to music. Subsequently, he completed the two ongoing studies at the music academy (theory and concert organ major) with diplomas. He changed the subject constellation of his university studies and later obtained a licentiate in musicology, art history, and modern history. Alongside his professional activity, he took regular further education lessons for several years with Pierre Cogen, the titular organist of the Basilique Ste-Clotilde in Paris. He also attended a cultural management training at the Stapferhaus at Lenzburg Castle. Previous pedagogical stations included the Bündner Teacher Seminary in Chur, the Schaffhausen Conservatory, and the classical department of the St. Gallen Music Academy.
